Who are the Scholars of al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation) in this Day and Age?

Noble Shaykh, who are the Scholars of al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation) in this Day and Age?

Answer: “By Allah, we don’t know of anyone who is from the Scholars of al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation) in this Day and Age. The Scholars of al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation) are in their graves now but their words are present within their books of al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation). Al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation) concerns the knowledge of the chain of transmission and the (knowledge) of the narrators of the prophetic narrations. Al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation) is not abusing people and belittling them, “Such and such a person is this”, and “such and such a person is that”. Some of the people are praised and some of the people are disparaged. This is backbiting and gossip not al-Jarh (Disparagement) wat-Ta’deel (Recommendation).”

Ash-Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, may Allah protect him from every evil and harm.

Assalaam alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

I want to clarify that in no way is our Shaykh, may Allah protect him from every evil and harm, censuring refutations in this ruling. Refutations are an entirely different issue and he has responded to questions concerning them.

The Shaykh upholds the way of the Salaf in refuting innovations, disbelief, hypocrisy, and falsehood by holding to the Prophetic Sunnah.

If you would like to know the proper prophetic manners that the scholars are to observe in refuting and calling the refuted to the truth, then please refer to my translation of our Shaykh’s beneficial lecture, “The Difference between Advising and Disparagement” by going to this link:

And the second part can be found here:

Permission was granted to me by the publisher to translate and distribute this translation to benefit the English speaking Muslims. I ask Allah to place it on my scale of good deeds.

And as is well that Imaam Al-Albaani specifially called 'Allaamah Rabee' al Madhkhali the flagbearer of Al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel in these times.

And the statement of Imaam Ibn Othaimeen that this science is not dead or buried but is alive till the day of Judgement.

As-salaamu 'alaykum akhee,
I believe there is a difference of opinion regarding the matter among the scholars of Ahlu-Sunnah. But from the little I know, this khilaaf is not a khilaaf ma'nawi, but a khilaaf lafdhi. Some scholars such as the noble Shaykh's Shaykh Fawzan and Shaykh Ghudayyan mention that there is no Jarh Wa-Ta'deel in this era but what exists is Radd 'alal Mukhaalaf. Others like the noble shaykhs, Shaykh Rabee', Shaykh Muqbil mention that both these are the same.
Yes, it is true that some go over board in this arena, whether it be called jarh wa ta'deel or radd 'alal mukhaalaf. We should be balanced. We should not ignore the other aspects of the Deen in contricting the deen to only mean refutations.
What do you think of these observations, may Allaah bless you?

Brother Anonymous, wa Iyyakum Ajma'een.

All of the answers to this are found within the Shaykh's lecture so please refer to is as it is beneficial and contains the solution to this issue.

Also refer to the new treatise of Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbaad that has been translated and posted on Madeenah.com. It addresses the issue of al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel.

Make Duaa for me,
